Singer-songwriter Mike McKenna Jr. is an award-winning artist from Cape Breton Island; with a raspy and soulful voice, his warm folk and Americana tones decorate powerful songs laden with captivating storytelling. Born in the coal mining town of Glace Bay and raised along the Mira River, Mike's songwriting aesthetic points heavily to his roots growing up in Eastern Cape Breton. Over the course of 4 studio albums, including his latest record 'Smokey Mountain High', he brings us the nostalgia of his home through dreamy narratives and true stories about life and death in Nova Scotia's coastal, working-class communities. In recent years Mike's music has earned him an East Coast Music Award, along with additional nominations from the Canadian Folk Music Awards and the Music Nova Scotia Awards. His songs have twice landed him a semi-finalist in the International Songwriting Competition (I.S.C.), and his newest single 'Grassfire' continues to receive national airplay on CBC Radio and considerable international airplay on SiriusXM's North Americana.
Like sirens calling from an ancient shore, the haunting three-part harmonies of Jessica Pearson & The East Wind will bind you in a timeless folkloric spell. Alchemizing roots, classic country, Americana and Celtic soundscapes, the trio spin tales of outlaw heroics, matriarchal power, resistance and resilience, and the unrelenting beauty of becoming who you are. Jessica Pearson and the East Wind's live show will first bring you to the edge of your seat, and then to the edge of tears - before spilling over into joy, community, and a sense of sacred, shared power. Backed by the impeccable harmonies of Sam Stone and Malia Rogers alongside clawhammer banjo, mandolin, and tasteful percussion, Jessica's storytelling and songs centre kindness and vulnerability while imploring audiences toward a better future for all. Audiences will enjoy versatile Americana stomp-and-holler, upbeat Celtic sing-and-sway, and intimate, high-lonesome folk ballads, replete with singalong choruses, energetic audience banter, and the occasional unexpected party trick. JPEW's newest song cycle balances complex topics such as gender-based violence and mental health with moments of levity, empowerment, and reminders to embrace the beautiful imperfections that make us unique. With an upcoming two-part album produced by JUNO-winner Hill Kourkoutis featuring an all-women team, JPEW is rising up to offer a powerful musical battle cry against the status quo. Don't be afraid to show up alone; from the minute the first chord plays, you'll be among friends.
