Drawing inspiration from theatre and documentary film, Sensei H is back with a show that defies the conventions of rap and showcases her signature charisma. The intention is clear: to deliver an extraordinary experience. La mort du troisième couplet (“the death of the third verse”) embraces a deliberate sonic eclecticism, ranging from house to trap-rock by way of pure hip-hop, that unfolds on stage in a fusion of electronic and acoustic music.
A Franco-Algerian artist now based in Quebec City, Sensei H performs French rap where the lyrics take precedence, an approach that earned her second place in the 2024 Francouvertes competition. That same year, she wrote the music for Télé-Québec’s promotional campaign, an adaptation of her song “Hors du commun”.
She is greatly influenced by a specific era of French rap (between 2006 and 2012), which she discovered through Sniper’s Trait pour trait. That album showed her that there are a thousand ways to take a stand in society and that everyone can do so in their own way—in her case, through writing.
In 2022, Sensei H and her fellow musician, beatmaker Vérone, released the album Trop de chance, marking the beginning of a promising relationship. They promoted the album together on stage, opening for Alaclair Ensemble, Black M, and Souldia, and performing at the Francofolies de Montréal, the Festival d’été de Québec, and the Festif! summer music festival in Baie-St-Paul, Quebec. Dedicated to perfecting her craft, Sensei H also leads writing workshops, notably as part of Le Festif! à l’École program of artists in the schools.
Her latest album, La mort du troisième couplet, was released in November 2024.
