Ottawa jazz vocalist Karen Oxorn is delighted to return to GigSpace for a concert in celebration of The Big 7-O! Although she doesn’t present many shows these days, she is delighted to celebrate this milestone birthday with music. For her 60th birthday in 2016, Karen put on a show entitled “From 0 to 60: A Birthday Celebration in Song.” Now, for her 70th birthday, she’s returning with a new show created to mark the beginning of this new decade.
“Another Decade, Another Show” is named with a nod to a Cole Porter song from the musical “Kiss Me, Kate.” The set list will feature songs by some of Karen’s favourite composers and lyricists of the Great American Songbook including Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, George and Ira Gershwin, Frank Loesser, Rodgers and Hart, and, of course, Cole Porter (but with a different song from the same musical.) The concert will showcase songs which Karen has performed over 25 years of singing the standards as well as some newer songs in her repertoire, many of which she will be performing for the first time.
Karen will also feature a couple of original compositions, including one written especially for the concert, as well as new lyrics set to a beloved country and western classic. The concert repertoire will explore the joy, pain, excitement, confusion, and occasional delusion that can sometimes be a part of this crazy little thing called love. The musicians who will accompany Karen will be announced soon.
