Who Are They? Formed in 2009 out of a shared passion for British music, The Start bring together a lineup of seasoned musiciansâsome born in the UK, others steeped in the Ottawa sceneâall united by a love for five decades of iconic tunes from across the pond.
Meet the Band: Graeme Weeks (Vocals & Guitar) â Hailing from Essex, East London, Graeme cut his teeth performing in some of Londonâs toughest venues before relocating to Canada. His journey through Quebec and Ottawa eventually led to forming The Start. David Little (Lead Guitar) â A former âweb guruâ with roots in the UK punk and indie scenes. He played through Halifaxâs early grunge/indie surge in the late â80s and â90s before returning to his British rock roots with The Start. Tea breaks and gardening included. Nathan Hoedeman (Percussion) â A former soccer teammate of Graeme, Nathan grew up surrounded by British invasion classicsâThe Beatles, The Clash, The Who, and moreâfueling his groove-driven drumming style. His motto? âLifeâs too shortâget on the dance floor already!â Martin Newman (Bass Guitar) â Ottawa-born, Martin began his musical path in high school and has since toured from Ottawa to Berlin and San Diego, playing every genre from jazz to rock, and even toured Europe on a cruise ship. Asher Darling (Keyboards) â A classically trained pianist and composer from the University of Ottawa, Asher blends technical precision with pop and rock dynamism.
Their Sound & Legacy: Expect a lively set overflowing with beloved British classicsâfrom David Bowie to Amy Winehouse, The Cure to The Rolling Stonesâall delivered with contagious energy and polished finesse.
